Trout in the classroom
In January 2015, DMS received our batch of eggs for the Trout in the Classroom Initiative. Students from all grades assist with the care of the fish, as well as log the water quality and general health of the fish. The entire 6th grade participated in a cross curricular project in which the trout were used as a gateway to discuss human impact on the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Students learned about, discussed and made awareness posters about the watershed in science class. Students then took this new information to write persuasive letters to Governor Larry Hogan about his efforts to lessen restrictions surrounding the Chesapeake Watershed Clean Water Act. In March, students from all grades entered an essay contest explaining the importance of trout within the watershed; as well as explained what they think it means to be a Green School. The top 60 entries ( 20 from each grade) will be invited to the trout release at Jerusalem Mill in Baltimore County. The event will include a litter clean-up, water quality survey, nature walk, trout release, fly fishing tutorial, and a macroinvertebrate survey of leaf pack which were constructed by the DMS Green Club. |
Character Education: Environmental Stewardship
On October 15, 2014, the DMS Positive Behavior Interventions and Strategies committee conducted a school wide Character Education lesson regarding Environmental Stewardship. All grades and contents conducted the lesson directly after the morning announcements. The focus of the lesson was to inform students of some of the most pressing environmental concerns in our local and global communities and then have them collaboratively explain their role in protecting the environment.
