Student Driven Sustainability Practice 2.4 - Habitat Restoration
Bluebird boxes
In October and November of 2014, our 14 Green Club students( spanning grades 6-8) learned about the near extinction and subsequent resurrection of the Eastern Bluebird. Then they were trained on the specifics of proper construction of bluebird boxes( Mr. Compher received training at a Nature for Teacher's seminar). The students built ten bluebird boxes which will be used to build a bluebird trail in the spring of 2015. The bluebird trail will be an integral part of Dundalk Middle's Environmental Literacy Project, a habitat restoration and buffer zone project benefiting the entire community. The project is funded by a $4,000 Environmental Literacy grant awarded to the students of DMS for their Grand Prize winning efforts during the 2014 Clean Green 15 Challenge. In January 2015, the Green Club students constructed a display in the auditorium lobby which showcases the bluebird project, as well as our Trout in the Classroom initiative.

Reef Balls
In March of 2015, Mr. Joe Davis came to Dundalk Middle to show the Green Club how to build reef balls which will serve as oyster habitat in the Chesapeake Bay. These students (grades 6-8) then brought a friend the following session and taught them how to make them. It is anticipated that the students will construct 6-8 reef balls by the end of the school year.
