Storm drains
In November of 2013, the 14 members of the Green Club ( grades 6-8) accompanied Mr. Seyi from the Dundalk Renaissance Corporation for an afternoon of creating storm drains stencils in the community surrounding Dundalk Middle. Mr. Seyi held a Q & A with the students prior to the event to explain the importance behind what they were doing. Throughout the event, curious local residents inquired about what was going on. The students explained the process and the reasoning, and actually recruited a few other people to help. Additional storm drain stenciling is scheduled for this upcoming spring.

Courtyard rain gardens / Blue bird trails
In October of 2014, DMS students were awarded a $4,000 Environmental Literacy grant for their efforts during the 2013 - 2014 school year. The entire student body rallied together to win the Clean Green 15 Challenge ( further documentation in SDSP 2.3 - Solid Waste Reduction ). The students decided the best way to use this funding was to construct rain gardens near the storms drain in the main courtyard. Additionally, they decided to build a blue bird trail on the school grounds. The blue birds will help reduce the insect population, thereby reducing the need to use chemical- based insecticides which end up in the storm drains. Construction of the two projects will begin in April, 2015.
